New for 2013. Samsung’s top of the line, fourth generation of 3D LED backlit TVs from Samsung. SmartReview previewed the F8000 Series at CES 2013 (see our commentary). Samsung’s UN65F8000 65-inch LED backlit HDTV (with Micro Dimming Ultimate) is 3D ready and comes with 4 pairs of Active 3D glasses. New for 2013 is the addition of Precision Black Local Dimming with the Micro Dimming Ultimate LED edge backlight technology. It uses special edge mounted LEDs to enable the controlled lighting of variable size areas. This provides for better picture, deeper blacks, and contrast whether watching 2D or 3D. 3D movies such as Avatar and other movies have created demand for 3D programming for HDTVs for the home. With this HDTV you can use the included 3D glasses with 3D Blu-ray players, and watch 3D specific programming as they come available on cable and satellite. The Ultra Clear Panel eliminates reflections, and boosts the contrast ratio. Included on the UN65F8000 is 1200 CMR (clear motion rate) anti-blur technology (up from 960 from last year’s model). 240Hz provides blur free, clear motion. This full HD 1080p HDTV has several new ways to interface with the TV, including Gesture control (using your hands), and voice control. Its built in camera has face recognition to bring up your profile, or use Skype. DLNA CERTIFIED® connectivity lets you remotely access music, video, and photos. The 1080p display has over two million pixel resolution.

Smart TV: The Samsung F8000 LED Series now has a Quad Core processor to speed up Smart TV functionality. The TV is internet ready with Samsung Apps (hundreds available) and a Full Web Browser (broadband service required) which will give you access to Netflix (with subscription), Youtube, Facebook, Blockbuster, Hulu Plus, Twitter, Sports and more. A pop-up camera will allow you to use Skype and other applications. Just plug in an ethernet cable, or use the included Built-in wireless WiFi. To assist the Smart TV functions, the remote control has a touchpad, and a microphone (for voice commands).

The UN55F8000 can display lifelike 3D images when viewed with Samsung’s Active 3D shutter glasses (4 pair included). The F8000 series can Convert 2D movies, sports and shows to 3D. Ultra Slim Design, only 1.6″ inch thick (without stand) and an ultraslim bezel. Energy Star compliant. ATSC with QAM digital TV tuners built in. 1 Component video input, and 4 HDMI (ver 1.4) inputs for full 2D/3D connectivity for DVD players, Blu-ray, PS3, Camcorders, PCs and a range of other digital devices. Also features two 10 watt stereo speakers with DTS Premium 5.1 Dound. 3 USB 2.0 ports for digital photo/video/MP3 playback, Ethernet port.

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2013, The 65-inch UN65F8000 is Samsung’s fourth generation LED 3D TV and comes fully loaded. SmartReview saw this TV at the Consumer Electronics Show. We felt this TV had one of the best pictures we had seen at the show for a 1080p LED TV. Beautiful colors and contrast. (See our picture above). The biggest improvement is the upgrade to a Quad Core Processor (first in a TV), which will greatly speed up the Smart TV features, allow multitasking, and allow new features. 3x faster than Samsung’s 2012 TV models. Many of the older Smart TVs are just too sluggish, so the quad core processor will more than remedy that. The Micro Dimming Ultimate adds special algorithms and scanning technology to give you a better more uniform picture with higher contrast, and can make letterbox bars inky black. Samsung has added many new ways to communicate with your TV. Voice control (you control your TV by speaking commands), Gesture Control (move your hands to change things on the screen), and a touchpad on the remote which allows you to change channels, change apps, voice control, or use the web browser. The F8000 comes with two remotes, a traditional universal and a Smart Touch Remote.

More 2013 Upgrades: For 3D Samsung has provided 4 pairs of 3D glasses (bluetooth), an upgrade to 1200 CMR anti blur technology with 240Hz, upgraded to 4 HDMI ports, lighter and slimmer, and lower power consumption. Precision Black Local Dimming has been added to this TV, which last year was only available on the ES9000 Series. We are happy to see this since this technology is what made the 75-inch ES9000 our top LED TV for picture quality in 2012. This technology makes the blacks deeper by dimming LEDs that project behind dark areas of the picture without affecting the light areas of the picture. The UN65F8000 has received excellent reviews, and is a great upgrade from last year’s ES8000 model. We believe the Samsung UN65F8000 to be one of the top LED TVs for 2013 and is a SmartReview Top Pick.
