The Mid-Range Full Frame FX Nikon D700 SLR is one of Nikon’s best SLRs. It is highly rated by professional and owner reviews. It is slightly smaller and less expensive than Nikon’s other FX imager SLRs. It is capable of 12.1 megapixel images with low noise. This model also has a higher ISO range than other Nikon SLRs for better low light performance (200-6400). Other features include Live View with two shooting modes. Live View allows you to compose your pictures and movies by using the new 3.0-inch LCD high resolution screen (920,000 pixels). 5.0 fps continuous shooting, Active D-Lighting function which can vastly improve shadows and highlights of high-contrast scenes. The D700 has a fast, accurate 51-point AF with 3D Focus Tracking: Exacting autofocus precision, plus three Dynamic AF modes. The 3D tracking can focus and lock-on a moving subject. Ultrasonic sensor cleaning for dust reduction.

The D700 starts up in a mere 0.12 seconds and has a nearly imperceptible shutter-lag response time. Nikon’s Scene Recognition System analyzes information from the 1,005-pixel RGB light sensor for use in auto exposure, auto white balance and autofocus calculations. Rugged construction. Camera body is made of high-strength magnesium alloy as well as being weather sealed using o-rings to keep out dust and moisture.

Smart-Review Commentary: The D700 is one of the best full frame (FX) SLRs from Nikon. It is rugged and sealed from the elements, as well as being more compact than the other Nikon FX SLRs. This model also has one of the highest ISO ratings for a Nikon SLR. Autofocus has been improved to 51 focus points as well as adding 3D focus tracking (which lets you track a moving subject). This SLR has two Live View modes. Its high resolution 3.0-inch LCD is covered with tempered glass for added protection, as well as a weather sealed magnesium alloy body. This is an excellent digital SLR. There is no HD movie mode on this SLR, if you need this function, we recommend the Canon EOS 5D Mark II 21.1 Megapixel Digital SLR which has the best HD movie mode in the business.
