Plasma TV Glossary of Terms

600Hz Subfield = Plasma TVs utilize a 600Hz refresh rate which can virtually eliminate motion blur for viewing action sports, movies, and video games.
1080p = (1920×1080) with about 2 million pixels resolution (Maximum Blu-ray quality). This is the most popular type of TV.
720p = (1366×768) with about 1 million pixels resolution. This is lower resolution than 1080p (about half the pixels). Usually seen on smaller HDTVs.
Energy Star® 4.0 = Earning the ENERGY STAR means a product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. For TVs, it means they save energy both in standby and active (when they’re on) modes. ENERGY STAR qualified TVs use about 30 percent less energy than standard units. Energy Star 4 is the latest guidline.
Contrast = refers to dynamic contrast. Higher is better. More contrast allows more shadow details in the picture.
Internet Ready = This means that this TV can give you content from the internet. Content varies with the manufacturer. This TV will provide an ethernet port to connect an ethernet cable. Or you can buy an optional Wifi USB plugin device to send the internet wirelessly to your TV. Popular content includes Netflix, Youtube, Skype, News, Weather, and more…
3D and 3D Ready = This means that this TV is capable of displaying 3D content from broadcast and 3D capable Blu-ray players. This TV has a built in emitter can communicate with 3D glasses to synchronize with the picture displayed on the TV.
DLNA = DLNA lets you remotely access your PC’s personal media so that you can download music, video, and photos and enjoy them anywhere in the home your TV is. DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance and is a collaboration of the leading consumer electronics, PC and mobile companies that has created design guidelines for a new generation of products that can work together – no matter what the brand.
SD Card Slot = This TV has an SD/SDHC card slot to put in memory cards from your camera or camcorder to view pictures and video on your TV.
HDMI = HDMI inputs allow you to connect devices to your HDTV such as DVD and Blu-ray players and game consoles.
THX Certified Display = This certification demonstrates that this HDTV can recreate the cinema experience at home, making the picture resemble movie theatre quality.

Newest Digital SLR Cameras: Shoot 1080p Video

Digital SLRs with Video: Movie and Video modes have been on smaller digital cameras since around 2002 but have been absent on SLRs until now. Recent SLR cameras have finally incorporated an HD movie mode. The latest versions of this compare favorably with some of the best HD video camcorders in terms of resolution and video quality. The best SLR movie mode technology is currently from Canon Digital SLRs. The Canon 7D, the full frame Canon 5D Mark II, and the Canon Rebel T2i all have a 1080p HD video mode capable of 24p and 30p (24 and 30 progressive frames per second). 24p is the same framerate as motion picture film, so many indie filmmakers like to see this capability in either camcorders or these new digital SLR cameras. All of these Canon SLRs provide video at a 1080p or 720p video resolution. Full 1080p will give you HD at 1920×1080 and 30fps (blu-ray quality). 720p video is the same video quality as regular HD on cable TV. Nikon Digital SLRs as of the writing of this article are not capable of shooting video at 1080p, but we expect they will in the near future.

The major advantage of having an onboard movie mode is the convenience of having the ability to take exceptional photos and videos in one compact package. There is less equipment to carry. The main disadvantage to an SLR being used as a camcorder is that there are less dedicated buttons and features for camcorder use, and the ergonomics are different (how you hold a camcorder versus an SLR). SLRs usually are held close to your face to see through the viewfinder, while consumer camcorders are held in your hand away from your face and you view the video thru the LCD screen. (Most newer camcorders have done away with viewfinders). With a Digital SLR you will not use the viewfinder, but will use the LCD screen for video recording.

The video from these latest digital SLRs was good enough to be used for HD production on several TV shows. The best example was the season finale of the TV show “House” on the fox network. The producers shot the entire episode using the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR. The primary reason for using this camera was that one of the key scenes was shot in a cramped space under a collapsed building that regular pro video equipment would not be able to fit. The smaller size of this Canon SLR provided the perfect solution, and its video was comparable to other episodes shot with regular pro equipment. Canon SLRs were also used to film part of a recent episode of Numb3rs, driving scenes on the show 24, and the tonight show opening shot.

If you are buying an SLR for video, it is most important to make sure that the SLR has a microphone jack. Smart Review lists which DSLRs have a microphone jack and which ones don’t. If you have a microphone jack, there are a lot of choices of mics that will give you much better sound than the mic that is built into the camera body. An external mic can mount on the flash shoe on the top of the camera which is a perfect spot for better sound quality.

In the future these SLRs will include even better features, and more use of these cameras in TV show production as well as for home use.

The Latest 2010 HDTVs – 2010 is an important year for High Definition TVs. In 2010 we see many more LED backlit TVs, and the introduction of 3D TVs. There are now more HDTVs with 240Hz and 120Hz technology than in previous years. 240HZ and 120HZ compensate for motion blur that can occur during fast moving action on LCD TVs. Most of our top-rated models incorporate this technology. There was also a huge improvement in LCD dynamic contrast (the ability to see the differences of light and dark better). Back in 2009 saw the exit of Pioneer as a plasma TV manufacturer. LED TVs for 2010 are very thin (1.2 inches) and have high contrast and low energy consumption. We also are seeing more TVs with internet capability (including Netflix streaming). Below are the new models that are currently covered by Smart-Review.

Samsung PNC8000 Plasma Series

The Samsung PNC8000 Plasma 3D TV Series. New for 2010, Samsung has introduced its first 3D capable Plasma TVs. This set can also convert 2D TV to 3D. Later this year, 3D programming content will be available from ESPN 3D, Directv, 3D Blu-ray Disks and other sources. The reason for the advent of 3D is the huge popularity in the movie theaters of movies like AVATAR and other 3D movies. 3D TVs use glasses that communicate with your TV to produce the 3D effect (sold separately). The PNC8000 series produces an outstanding 7,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. This Plasma Series is Energy Star 4.0 compliant to use less energy than last year’s models. Also new for 2010 is additional Samsung Apps for internet connectivity (including Netflix, Youtube, Skype and more…). This is the top of the line Plasma TV for Samsung in 2010. The PNC8000 Series is available in 50-inch, 58-inch, and 63-inch screen sizes.

Panasonic VIERA G25 Series

The Panasonic G25 Plasma Series. New for 2010. The new G25 series has seen improvement over last year’s models. Contrast has more than doubled to 5,000,000 to 1 (highest we have seen for Panasonic’s Plasma Series). The G25 Series a new NeoPDP Plasma panel which reduces reflections and creates sharper pictures with higher contrast in brighter environments. Other features include a 100,000 hour panel life, a built in SD card reader (to view your pictures and videos on the big screen), and new Energy Star 4.0 certification to reduce energy usage. AVCHD playback allows you to play back movies from your camcorder. The new G10 Series is also THX Certified for the best possible color reproduction. Also included is Viera Cast which allows you to enjoy contents of the internet on your TV. You can enjoy videos, photos, weather, Netflix, youtube, and other internet sites through a web interface built into the G25 TVs. The G25 Series is available in 42-inch, 46-inch, 50-inch, and 54-inch sizes.

LG LD650 Series

The LG LD650 LCD Series. New for 2010. LG’s latest low cost 240Hz line of LCD TVs. For 2010 LG has made improvements from previous years including an increase in contrast to 200,000:1 dynamic contrast. Response time has improved to a very fast 2 ms (great for gaming and fast action). The 240Hz technology will help to reduce or eliminate motion blur during fast action sports and movies. It has received excellent ratings from both professional reviewers and consumers. Other features include NetCast™ Entertainment Access:which brings Internet services direct to your TV. Instantly access movies and TV shows, news and more (including Netflix). Meets ENERGY STAR® v4.0 guidelines. 4 HDMI, 2 USB ports for digital photo/video/MP3 playback. The LG LD650 series is available in 55-inch and 47-inch sizes.

Samsung 650c Series

The Samsung 650c LCD Series. New for 2010, the 650 “c” series replaces last year’s 650 “b” series. The “b” series were a top selling Samsung HDTV last year. All of the 650c series are 120HZ sets. For 2010, contrast has improved from 100,000 to 150,000:1 dynamic contrast, uses 30% less energy, and has more internet content (such as Netflix, Youtube, and Blockbuster). 4ms response time, and 4 HDMI connections. The 55-inch model also gets 15 watts per speaker (10 watts in the other sizes). 2 USB ports allow for digital photo/video/MP3 playback on the big screen. The Samsung 650c series is available in 55-inch, 46-inch, 40-inch sizes.

The Samsung C8000 LED 3D TV Series. New for 2010, Samsung has introduced its first 3D capable TVs. This is the first Samsung TV with LED Precision Dimming Technology which provides uniform backlighting and the highest contrast ratio we have reviewed. This set can also convert 2D TV to 3D. Later this year, 3D programming content will be available from ESPN 3D, Directv, 3D Blu-ray Disks and other sources. The reason for the advent of 3D is the huge popularity in the movie theaters of movies like AVATAR and other 3D movies. 3D TVs use glasses that communicate with your TV to produce the 3D effect (sold separately). The UN8000 “C” series produces an outstanding 8,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. LED HDTVs also use far less power and are thinner than regular LCD and Plasma TVs. This one is Energy Star 4.0 and uses even less energy. Also new for 2010 is additional Samsung Apps for internet connectivity (including Netflix, Youtube, Skype and more…). Panasonic S2 Plasma TV Series

The Panasonic S2 Plasma Series. New for 2010. The Latest S2 series has seen improvement over the highly rated S1 series. The newer sets are lighter in weight, and use less energy. They are Energy Star 4 compliant. The native contrast ratio is now up to 2,000,000 to 1. The S2 Series has an anti-relective screen, 100,000 hour panel life, and built in SD card reader (to view your pictures on the big screen). The lower priced S2 series is almost identical to the Panasonic G25 series except that it lacks the THX Certification, Viera Cast,and AVCHD playback ability. Unlike the G25, this model is available in the giant 65-inch and 58-inch sizes. It has received excellent owner reviews. The S2 Series is available in 42-inch, 46-inch, 50-inch, 54-inch, 58-inch, and 65-inch sizes.

Samsung B7000 Series

The Samsung B7000 LED TV Series. For 2009 Samsung has introduced its 1.2 inch thin LED (edge lit) series of HDTVs. This HDTV uses a series of LED lights to illuminate the backlight for better contrast, lower power consumption, and thinner design. (Most other LCD HDTVs use a fluorescent light source). Upgraded to 3,000,000:1 dynamic contrast, 4ms response, 120Hz anti blur technology, DLNA, 4 HDMI, and is Energy Star 3.0 compliant. This HDTV has received high marks by both professional and consumer reviews. This TV is ideal for mounting on a wall, or you can use the included stand. The B7000 Series is available in 55-inch, 46-inch, and 40-inch sizes.

Sony XBR9 Series

The Sony XBR9 LCD Series. Sony’s top of the line LCD TVs. For 2009, Sony has replaced last year’s XBR6 top of the line model with the XBR9 series of HDTVs. All of the XBR9 line of HDTVs are now upgraded to 240HZ models, except for the 32-inch model, which is a 120HZ model. Contrast has doubled from last year’s XBR6 model to 100,000 to 1 dynamic contrast. Also upgraded is Sony’s excellent image processor to the new Sony Bravia Engine® 3 (except for the 32-inch model which uses the Bravia Engine 2). These help to upconvert lower quality video and are important for overall picture quality. The XBR9 also was upgraded to a wide color gamut backlight which will make the colors more vibrant. USB 2.0 port allows for digital photo/video/MP3 playback on the big screen. So for 2009 Sony has made some very impressive upgrades to its flagship XBR line.The Sony XBR9 series is available in 52-inch, 46-inch , 40-inch, and 32-inch sizes.

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2010, The edge lit LED backlit UN6300 “C” Series has received high ratings by both professional and owner reviews. The LED backlighting provides higher contrast and uses up to 40% less electricity than conventionally backlit HDTVs. In addition, without a stand, the TV is only 1.2 inches thick, making it suitable for mounting on the wall. The 6300 Series is a lower cost LED TV from Samsung without internet ready features. It does have features to play music, movies and other media from its USB 2.0 port, and from your computer (AllShare™ ). The 55-inch and 60-inch models have 15 watt speakers, while the 40 and 46-inch models have 10 watt speakers.

*New for 2010. The top of the line compact Panasonic HDC-TM700K Dual Flash camcorder features a built-in 32gb of internal memory to record full HD video (you can also use SDHC/SDXC memory cards). This camcorder features High-density, ultra-smooth video at 1080/60p Recording (Full-HD 1920 x 1080, 60 Progressive frames Recording). It also includes a fast F1.5-F2.8 lens that was created for the HDC-TM700 to help in low light situations. The new lens has a wider 35mm wide-angle lens which can fit more people and more of the background into the frame than a conventional lens. The imaging sensor consists of three 1/4.1-inch 3MOS sensors (3 x 3.05mp) which can provide up to 1,920×1,080 of HD resolution. Takes 14.2 megapixel still pictures. Included are advanced features such as optical image stabilization, 12x optical zoom and , Manual controls and a focus ring, electronic viewfinder, 24p accessory shoe, and microphone input, and Time Lapse Recording. At full resolution the camcorder records to MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 (original format) at a 28mbps bit rate. All other video is recorded with AVCHD. This camcorder is capable of recording full HD 1080p at (60 frames/second) which is higher than any camcorder we have reviewed to date. This will give you smoother video, especially for fast moving action, like sports. Editing and viewing this video will require a fast computer. You can take a frame of the video and capture it later as a picture. Also included is a faster brighter lens for low light situations, and a wider angle lens than last year’s model. Its 3MOS imagers were made for low light capability. This camcorder has some of the highest professional ratings for a consumer camcorder that we have seen. In addition, you have a range of inputs, manual control, viewfinder, external microphone jack, and other professional features makes this a complete feature rich camcorder. The HDC-HS700K model (shown below) is identitical to the HDC-TM700K except that it has a 240gb HDD drive and is slightly larger in size.

Glossary of Terms

Closest Focus Distance = This is the nearest object that you can focus on. Lower power binoculars can focus on closer objects than high power binoculars.
Apparent field of view = Apparent field of view is the angular diameter, expressed in degrees (°), of the circle of light that the eye sees through your binoculars. A large field of view is good for a seeing a large amount of area (usually with lower power binoculars). Higher power binoculars zoom in on a smaller area.
Eye Relief = Eye relief is the distance (in millimeters) that a binocular can be held from your eye and the full field of view can still be observed. More Eye relief distance is important for those that wear eyeglasses.
