*New for 2012* The 22.3 megapixel Canon EOS 5D Mark III is Canon’s newest Full Frame digital SLR, the follow on model to the extremely popular 5D Mark II. It shares many of the features of the more expensive Canon 1D X that we previewed at the Consumer Electronics Show, but at a much lower price. Canon was caught by surprise at the popularity of the 5D Mark II’s use as a filmmaking tool for TV shows and movies. The 5D Mark II was used in recent movies and TV shows such as Act of Valor, Red Tails, Walking Dead, 24, Hawaii Five-O and many more. The new 5D Mark III is not only upgraded to address picture quality, but is putting in features that will make filmmakers more productive. This model will be popular with photo journalists that require both photos and video.

Canon 5D Mark III LCD Screen and Button Layout

The HD movie mode can shoot Full 1080p HD Video at frame rates 1080p @30fps & 24fps, 720p @ 60 fps with manual exposure control. The movie function has been greatly improved by adding a headphone jack for monitoring audio while shooting. You can also monitor (on the LCD screen) the audio levels, and adjust them. With the external microphone jack, you have many audio options. The 5D Mark III includes two methods of synchronizing video with SMPTE-compliant timecode embedding. Using the new power of Canon’s Digic 5+ chip has reduced video artifacts such as chromatic aberration, moiré artifacting, and rolling shutter. In addition Canon has added more compression options that are better at higher bit rates than previously available. New options include ALL-I or IPB. We are excited about the ALL-I intraframe codec, since this will compress each frame of video individually (rather than a group of frames), and give you as close to uncompressed video as we have ever seen. This codec has a very high bitrate for maximum quality. The improved ISO will greatly help low light video taking. A new dedicated Movie/Live View button has been added to the camera. Canon has provided filmmakers with some important upgrades and this will be very popular with independent filmmakers.

The Native ISO has greatly increased to ISO 100-25,600 (expandable to 102,400), Burst mode of 6 frames per second, Upgraded Autofocus to 61 AF points, HDR Mode (High Dynamic Range), Shutter durability of 150,000 cycles. The built-in mini HDMI port can hook up to an HDTV or monitor. The back of the camera features a high resolution 3-inch LCD screen (1,040,000 pixels). Use the large LCD with the Live View Function for composition of both pictures and video. EOS Dust Removal System removes dust from the full frame sensor automatically. The 5D Mark III’s magnesium alloy body is dust and weather resistant.

Upgrade features from the 5D Mark II: ISO goes from 6400 to 25600, 61 AF points (up from 19), Burst mode to 6 fps from 3.9, added a Headphone jack, Manual audio level monitoring and adjustment, Dual SD and CF cards, HDR Mode, Time code, More video compression options. Reduction in chromatic aberration, moiré artifacting, and rolling shutter in video mode. Upgraded to 22.3 megapixels, Digic 5+ processor (17x faster than Digic 4), 29 minutes of shooting time per clip (up from 12 minutes). New LiveView/Movie Mode button has been added.

Shutter speeds: 30 – 1/8000 second, ISO: from 100-25600, Burst Mode: 6 fps
Memory Cards and Battery: Dual CF and SD Card Slot. Compatible with UDMA CF cards; SD, SDHC, and SDXC Memory Cards. Lithium-ion battery LP-E6 (included). USB 2.0.
Dimensions: 6.0″ x 4.6″ x 3.0″ ( 30.3 ounces – body only).

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2012, Canon’s 5D Mark III is a greatly improved camera for both photo and video. The upgraded ISO will help to get low light shots and video not possible with the 5D Mark II. The huge improvements for video will keep Canon at the forefront of video filmmaking. Absent from this camera is a raw video output in HDMI, but the new ALL-I video codec should keep most people very happy with this camera as you can store the best quality next to raw video right in the camera, keeping it less bulky than if you had an external recorder hooked up to the HDMI port. The ALL-I codec records at an astonishing rate: 91 mb/sec bitrate. This is compared to AVCHD which tops out at 24mb/sec, and the 38mb/sec native compression of the 5D Mark II. This is the first EOS camera with a headphone jack. This was something that many were asking for from Canon. You can now silently adjust levels with the control dial/touch pad during recording. Some people were disappointed that the camera only went up 1 megapixel in resolution. However, we feel Canon made the right decision, as this camera has a much higher ISO and dynamic range than it would if they bumped up the megapixels substantially. If you are buying this camera for pictures, you will be quite pleased with the higher ISO (4x higher than the 5D Mark II), more AF points, Dual cards (CF and SDHC), faster burst mode (6 fps). The dual memory cards can be set to record to the other once one is full, or record to both cards at once, making a realtime backup.

One reason that the Canon 5D Mark III is able to achieve substantial improvements in features and speed is the introduction of the Digic 5+ chip. It is 17 times faster than the older Digic 4 chip found on the Mark II. This additional power will be able to process and optimize images and video better before it writes to to the memory card. Unlike the Nikon D800, the 5D Mark III features SMPTE-compliant timecode which will help to synchronize audio when doing multiple camera video shots. The camera now has the power to reduce moir‚ color artifacts, and even the rolling shutter effect in videos. The length of a single clip of video has improved from 12 minutes to 29 minutes. When the 29 minutes is up, you simply start a new clip. This is a worthy upgrade of 5D Mark II, and we believe is one of the best DSLR cameras of 2012, at a substantial discount from the Canon 1D X. It is without hesitation, a SmartReview Top Pick for 2012.

When we saw this, we found it hard to believe that a projector could be put into a small camcorder. The projector window is located on the outside of the flip out LCD and can project an image up to 100 inches from 15 feet. Its actually a tiny window, but its very bright when activated. Sony had a demonstration of the projector in a darkened room. We were quite impressed by this little projector. Sony claims these projectors are twice as bright as last year’s models. Sony for its higher end camcorders has also created a new type of image stabilization called Balanced Optical SteadyShot™ that goes from the lens to the imager, giving a much stabler picture, up to 13 times better than regular image stabilization. (Available on the 760V models). The higher end HDR-PJ710V, HDR-PJ760V and HDR-CX760V models can capture full HD 24p and 60p recording with 24.1-megapixel still images, and wider 26mm lens. For 2012 Sony has rolled out a new 3D camcorder, the HDR-TD20V which is 34% smaller than last year’s model. Up to 720p in 3D mode. Sony’s low priced midrange camcorders HDR-CX260 (16GB), HDR-XR260 (160GB HDD), and HDR-PJ260 (16GB with projector) all share the same CMOS imager, lens, and standard features.

In the mid-range, Canon has introduced new models that have a newly designed HD CMOS Pro sensor that improves resolution, low light performance, and expands dynamic range. Canon for 2012 is introducing 6 new flash memory camcorders. Three HF M-Series models including the HF M500 (flash memory), the HF M52 (dual flash memory 32GB) and Three HF-R series models (see SmartReview’s video below). Some of the models are able to connect to internet by WiFi, allowing you to share your pictures and video to media sites including Youtube and Facebook. You also have the ability to connect to an iphone or ipad using a free upload App. These camcorders also give you the option to record in AVCHD or MP4. AVCHD is best for HDTV viewing, while MP4 is best for sharing on mobile devices and social media sites. The 2012 vixia line improves low light performance by 20%.

Panasonic HC-X900 Camcorder

Panasonic Camcorders for 2012: Panasonic for 2012 has introduced three new Full HD camorders a single 1MOS imager. They are the HC-V700, HC-V500, and HC-V100. The HC-V700 has a high sensitivity sensor for better low light shooting. The top of the line for Panasonic consumer camcorders is the HC-X900 (which replaces last year’s TM900). This model has features not on the other models. This includes a 3MOS sensor (3 imagers), which improves image quality, a three chip processing engine, and LCD screen resolution that has almost tripled from last year to 1.15 million pixels. Panasonic has discontinued making HDD (Harddrive) camcorders in 2012, in favor of those with built-in memory. Panasonic’s 3D camcorders for 2012 no longer need an adapter ring, as the new 3D lenses mounts directly onto the camcorder. SmartReview got a demonstration of this at the show. Eliminating the adapter ring reduces misalignment that can occur when mounting the 3D lens.

JVC GY-HMQ10 4K Camcorder

JVC Camcorders for 2012: For 2012 the biggest news for JVC is its 4KCam camcorder. The footage we saw on a Toshiba 4K hdtv was absolutely stunning. This was the best video that SmartReview has seen to date. SmartReview Also got to see JVC’s GS-TD1 3D camcorder which was showing on the monitor in realtime with 3D glasses. This was the best 3D video we had seen taken by a 3D camcorder. JVC claims this to be the first consumer camcorder to offer 3D recording in Full 1080p HD. See our video below of the JVC 4KCam:

Here is a short overview of what caught our attention at the show in regards to the latest HDTVs.

Many of the TV manufacturers were showing advanced technology, including OLED displays and 4K HDTVs (also referred to as QFHD (3840×2160) Quad high definition). Also presented was an 8K HDTV prototype, and wireless & cordless HDTVs. 2012 will be the year of the big TV, as Sharp, LG and Samsung were all showing giant LED HDTVs in the 70, 75, 80 and 84 inch sizes. Smart TVs were on display at many of the manufacturers as internet and device connected TVs are becoming more common. Giant touchscreen TVs that can be used for presentations were shown as well.

World's Largest 3D OLED TV

LG TVs 2012: LG was displaying their new models and had several 55-inch OLED displays showing 3D content. LG was handing out passive 3D polarized glasses to everyone in the area, as most of their TVs were displaying 3D content. The OLED displays looked great, with very deep blacks, and colors that were vibrant and bright. The OLED displays were showing 3D content. LG uses passive 3D technology on all of its TVs, using inexpensive polarized glasses. SmartReview was very impressed by LG’s 84LM9600 84 inch 4K LED TV (84UD). Currently this TV is touted as the world’s largest Ultra definition 3D TV. Since passive 3D cuts the resolution in half, this 84 inch 4K TV will show 3D in Full 1080p HD for each eye. It was the best 3D that SmartReview saw at the show. LG as well as other companies are really big on Smart TVs (which give you internet content, apps, and more). LG was also displaying a pen touch TV, which is a touchscreen with a special pen to write on it.

SmartReview now has reviews on several of the LG Cinema Series Smart LED 3D TVs, including the LM7600 models , the LM6700 models, and the LM6200 models. (All of these models include 6 pairs of 3D glasses). The LM8600 Series is the first LG model with a Dual Core processor. This will greatly improve navigating the Smart TV functions, and internet connectivity.

Panasonic Display at CES 2012

Panasonic Viera TVs 2012: Panasonic has revamped its product line, and we are seeing a move to larger LED TVs (as last year Panasonic focused on smaller sized LED TVs). Panasonic makes some of the best Plasma TVs available, and has made some incremental improvements on these TVs. Also significant is that both their LED and Plasma TVs will see significant energy savings for 2012 over the 2011 models. They had a display showing how many watts a 2011 model was using versus the 2012 model. The savings were dramatic. (59 watts this year versus 82 watts from last year’s model). Panasonic Plasma has one of the fastest TV screens at 2500 pixels/second (up from 1200 last year) as we were told by a Panasonic rep at the show. Panasonic’s largest TV for 2012 is 65 inches. New IPS panels used for their LED TVs let more light shine through (brighter picture) and are more energy efficient. Panasonic for 2012 has completely re-invented their top of the line plasma TVs. Panasonic is using a different cell structure, a new plasma gas that is more efficient and does not take as much energy to fire up, more internet options, thinner and lighter. These upgrades are available on the new ST50 models and GT50 THX models.

Samsung Super OLED TV

Samsung TVs 2012: Samsung and LG both had 55-inch OLED displays at CES 2012. LG showed their models with 3D content, while Samsung showed their Super OLED models with regular 1080p high definition content, so it was not possible to give a direct comparison of picture quality. However we can say that both LG and Samsung provided some of the best 3D and Regular HD pictures that we have seen. The Samsung Super OLED HDTVs are produced with a single pane of glass. Their Super OLED TV received the Best of Innovations 2012 award. (See our video of the Samsung OLED display). Samsung’s Super OLED will be on sale in the second half of 2012. New for 2012 is Samsung’s ES8000 Series TVs with a screen size up to 75-inches. SmartReview felt that the Samsung ES8000 series produced some of the best images for a 1080p LED TV at the show. The ES8000 incorporates a dual core CPU which will make Smart TV apps run smoothly. Samsung’s Smart TVs feature Smart Content, Smart Apps, Smart Interactions, and other unique ways to interact with your HDTV. This includes facial recognition, voice control, and motion control. Samsung has an app store for apps to add to your TV. Samsung’s ES6100 Series is Samsung’s best TV without 3D. Samsung’s Samsung’s EH6000 Series is a very popular high quality no frills HDTV without Smart TV or 3D abilities.

Sony HX850 Series with Monolithic Stand

Sony TVs 2012: While LG and Samsung introduced 55-inch OLED displays for CES 2012, Sony has introduced its prototype Crystal LED technology in a 55-inch display. Crystal LED technology uses 6 million LEDs on its panel which light up with no backlight. Sony claims that this technology will improve contrast 3.5 times, and response time by 10 times. Sony for 2012 will be reducing the number of model series from six in 2011 to just three in 2012 (10 new models). HX, EX, and BX series. The top HX Series HX850 and HX750 models will be available in 46 and 55-inch models with built-in WiFi. The HX850 models have a frameless Monolithic design and Motionflow XR 960, while the HX750 models have Motionflow XR480. A rep at the Sony booth told SmartReview that the Sony sets have changed the backlight from the top and bottom to the sides on the HX850 model. Sony has also improved its 3D glasses with a 10 degree tilt so you can lay back on your couch and still see the 3D with full contrast. The new glasses give you 5 hours of use for only 5 minutes of charge. Sony’s XBR range of models will be introduced later in 2012.

Sharp 80-inch LED TV

Sharp Aquos TVs 2012: For CES 2012 Sharp displayed its line of HDTVs, with more LED backlit and 3D models. The big change in 2012 with sharp is the introduction of giant 70 and 80-inch 3D TVs, including the Aquos LC80LE844U 80-inch model with a full array LED backlight. We believe that there is a trend to bigger and bigger HDTVs. Since these TVs can be made lighter than in the past, it is probable that we will be seeing more of these monster sized TVs available.

The big hit at Sharp was their AQUOS Freestyle TVs which are lightweight, cordless (except for the 60-inch model) and wireless. These TVs can be used wirelessly as far away as 98 feet from the video signal. Sharp showed a demonstration (see video) where several models walked around with each size of TV (which were all on and playing a program.) It was an amazing sight and certainly one of our highlights of the CES 2012 show. The rep told SmartReview that the freestyle is currently only being sold in Japan, and Sharp has not announced a date of introduction to the U.S. market yet. Sharp also showed prototypes of their 4K and 8K TVs. Sharp told us that the 4K TV will be out this year. These are ultra-resolution TVs. The 4K TV was side-by-side with a 1080p TV. Both were using a 1080p Blu-ray to display the video. The video was upconverted on the 4K TV. You could definitely see a sharper more vivid picture on the 4K TV, even though the content was the same for both TVs.

Toshiba 4K TV hooked up to 4K Camcorder

Toshiba TVs 2012: One of the most impressive models from Toshiba was the Toshiba 4K TV that was on display at the JVC booth, hooked up to the JVC 4K Camcorder. The 4K TV has four times as many pixels as a regular 1080p HDTV. The images on the Toshiba TV were stunning from JVC’s camcorder. The clearest we had seen at the show, and probably because this TV was getting 4K content, instead of 1080p content. 4K has already started showing up at movie theaters, as they switch from film to digital projectors. Toshiba is introducing a new 50-inch size to LED TVs (normally you only see this size in Plasma). For 2012 Toshiba will use Passive 3D technology.

So to wrap up this article, 2012 has seen some substantial improvements to the 2011 models, but the new technologies including OLED, 4K, and Crystal LED will be the buzzwords for 2012, as will be the advent of giant sized TVs. Keep in mind that the OLED and 4K TVs will be enormously expensive initially. SmartReview.com will display the 2012 models with reviews and commentary as they become available.

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2011, Canon has another winner with the Canon EOS Rebel T3i. It has many of the features of the EOS 7D. Outstanding consumer and professional reviews. This camera has many features that previously were only included on high end SLRs. The Canon T3i has an improved Full HD movie capture which supports 1080p at 30 frames/second (blu-ray quality). It can also capture at 24p (film speed). The external microphone jack allows you to use an external microphone for best sound. The CMOS sensor gives you 18.0 megapixels and low light sensitivity with an ISO of 100-6400. The new articulating screen allows you to take shots at angles not possible before. The T3i includes Ultrasonic Sensor cleaning, LiveView for composing shots with the LCD, and a new feature called video sensor crop, giving you more telephoto in HD Video mode with no image loss. Also new is the ability to remotely control multiple off-camera flashes. An external microphone jack allows for a wide range of microphones. The camera has a dedicated live view/video button. The new Video Snapshot mode allows you to take 2, 4, or 8 second videos throughout the day and then the T3i will splice these into a single movie. We believe that this camera is the best value for the money in the Canon line of DSLRs. It is a Smart-Review top pick.

Memory Cards: If you are going to record 1080p video on your T3i, for best results we recommend Class 10 SDHC memory cards that record at 30mb/s and higher. See the two Sandisk extreme cards listed below.

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2012, Sony has introduced a feature packed consumer camcorder at a modest price. The full HD 60p mode will make the video appear more real and fluid. We previewed the built-in projector function at CES 2012 Electronics Show, and the projector does a great job for its size. We saw it projected to its full 100-inch diagonal size on a screen. It has twice the light output of last year’s model. The HDR-PJ260V has a 16GB flash drive for recording hours of video and a memory slot for even more recording. This camcorder has been designed for low light conditions using its Back-Illuminated 1/3.9 Exmor R CMOS imager. The PJ260V can take up to 8.9 megapixel still images. This camcorder has the latest optical image stabilization technology to remove blurring during handheld use which will come in handy when using its 30x optical zoom. The built-in external microphone jack will allow you to use external microphones for better sound. The built-in GPS can tag your video so you know where you were (exactly) when it was shot, and show your location on the LCD screen.

The Sony HDR-PJ260V’s Tracking Focus feature allows you to touch a subject on the LCD touchscreen and have the camcorder follow it and keep it in focus. The CX260 has a built in USB cable for charging and transferring video to your computer. A new feature Clear Voice with Face Detection will switch to an audio mode that enhances the human voice when it detects a face. This camcorder also uses the highest possible AVCHD compression quality (24Mbps) when recording regular HD, and 28Mbps for the 60p mode. The wide angle lens will be important to you when taking group shots, panoramas, and indoor shots. The memory card slot can now accomodate SDHC cards as well as Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. This midrange model is a Smart-Review top pick for 2012.

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2012, Canon’s lowest cost camcorder with a big imaging sensor. The Canon HF M500 uses SDHC/SDXC memory cards to record full HD. The newly developed HD CMOS Pro Imager provides 20% higher light transmittance for better low light shooting and better dynamic range. The camcorder has three microphone settings for different situations. A really useful feature for moving subjects is Canon’s Touch & Track feature. You place your finger on the subject on the LCD screen, and the camcorder will follow the subject and keep it in proper focus and exposure. Canon’s new imager is designed to be at a native resolution of 1920×1080, the same size as Full HD video. This makes each pixel larger and able to collect more light. The M500′s External Microphone Jack gives you more options for quality sound, and a headphone jack will allow you to monitor your audio. The camcorder can also record in .mp4 format for uploading to facebook, youtube, etc. Great for sports. The low cost Canon HF M500 has received outstanding consumer reviews. It is an excellent HD camcorder choice for 2012 and is a Smart-Review top pick.

If you are looking for a TV with great 2D HD and 3D capabilities (with 6 pairs of 3D glasses included), then the 55-inch 55LM6700 is an excellent value. It is the least expensive LG with edge lit local dimming. We saw this model at CES 2012 with 3D glasses and were quite impressed by the picture. As with last year’s model, this TV has received excellent consumer reviews. It is a Smart-Review Top Pick for 2012.
