Here is a short overview of what caught our attention at the show in regards to the latest Camcorders. For 2012 we are seeing unique innovations and technologies, including camcorders with a built-in projector, 4K camcorders, WiFi connectivity, Upload video to mobile devices, advanced image stabilization, and more 3D camcorders. We expect to see the 2012 models arrive in the March/April time frame. In the meanwhile 2011 camcorders are being heavily discounted.

Sony Projector Camcorders

Sony Handycam Camcorders for 2012: Sony has revamped its line, and now offers built in projectors in most of its line of consumer camcorders. When we saw this, we found it hard to believe that a projector could be put into a small camcorder. The projector window is located on the outside of the flip out LCD and can project an image up to 100 inches from 15 feet. Its actually a tiny window, but its very bright when activated. Sony had a demonstration of the projector in a darkened room. We were quite impressed by this little projector. Sony claims these projectors are twice as bright as last year’s models. Sony for its higher end camcorders has also created a new type of image stabilization called Balanced Optical SteadyShot™ that goes from the lens to the imager, giving a much stabler picture, up to 13 times better than regular image stabilization. (Available on the 760V models). The higher end HDR-PJ760V and HDR-CX760V models can capture full HD 24p and 60p recording with 24.1-megapixel still images, 96GB Flash Drive, and wider 26mm lens. For 2012 Sony has rolled out a new 3D camcorder, the HDR-TD20V which is 34% smaller than last year’s model. Up to 720p in 3D mode.

Canon's New HF M50 WiFi Camcorder

Canon Camcorders for 2012: Most of Canon’s high end consumer camcorder line will remain the same as 2011 (at least for now). In the mid-range, Canon has introduced new models that have a newly designed HD CMOS Pro sensor that improves resolution, low light performance, and expands dynamic range. Canon for 2012 is introducing 6 new flash memory camcorders. Three HF M-Series models and Three HF-R series models (see Smart-Review’s video below). Some of the models are able to connect to internet by WiFi, allowing you to share your pictures and video to media sites including Youtube and Facebook. You also have the ability to connect to an iphone or ipad using a free upload App. These camcorders also give you the option to record in AVCHD or MP4. AVCHD is best for HDTV viewing, while MP4 is best for sharing on mobile devices and social media sites. The 2012 vixia line improves low light performance by 20%.

Panasonic HC-X900 Camcorder

Panasonic Camcorders for 2012: Panasonic for 2012 has introduced three new Full HD camorders a single 1MOS imager. They are the HC-700, HC-V500, and HC-V100. The HC-V700 has a high sensitivity sensor for better low light shooting. The top of the line for Panasonic consumer camcorders is the HC-X900 (which replaces last year’s TM900). This model has features not on the other models. This includes a 3MOS sensor (3 imagers), which improves image quality, a three chip processing engine, and LCD screen resolution that has almost tripled from last year to 1.15 million pixels. Panasonic has discontinued making HDD (Harddrive) camcorders in 2012, in favor of those with built-in memory. Panasonic’s 3D camcorders for 2012 no longer need an adapter ring, as the new 3D lenses mounts directly onto the camcorder. Smart-Review got a demonstration of this at the show. Eliminating the adapter ring reduces misalignment that can occur when mounting the 3D lens.

JVC GY-HMQ10 4K Camcorder

JVC Camcorders for 2012: For 2012 the biggest news for JVC is its 4KCam camcorder. The GY-HMQ10 is the first 4K camcorder of its kind, and will sell for about $5,000.00 which is hefty for consumers, but actually reasonable for a Professional device that can take video at this resolution (3840 x 2160) which has a resolution 4 times regular 1080p video. The footage we saw on a Toshiba 4K hdtv was absolutely stunning. This was the best video that Smart-Review has seen to date. Smart-Review Also got to see JVC’s GS-TD1 3D camcorder which was showing on the monitor in realtime with 3D glasses. This was the best 3D video we had seen taken by a 3D camcorder. JVC claims this to be the first consumer camcorder to offer 3D recording in Full 1080p HD.

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2011, the Panasonic HDC-TM900K has incremental improvements over last year’s top seller, the TM700K. The biggest change from last year is the availability of a 3D conversion lens for this camcorder and the capability to record in 3D. Other changes include better noise suppression, an advanced electronic wind filter, and a larger 3.5-inch screen with double the resolution from last year. This camcorder is capable of recording Full HD 1080p at (60 frames/second) which is higher than most other camcorders we have reviewed to date. The 60 frames/second will give you smoother video, especially for fast moving action, like sports. Editing and viewing this video will require a fast computer. You can take a frame of the video and capture it later as a picture. Also included is a faster brighter lens for low light situations, and a wider angle lens. Its 3MOS imagers were made for low light capability. In addition, you have a range of inputs, manual control, viewfinder, external microphone jack, and other professional features makes this a complete feature rich camcorder. Its an excellent HD camcorder whether you use the optional 3D lens or not. The Panasonic TM900k is a Smart-Review top pick for 2011.

Smart-Review Commentary: For 2011, Canon’s top of the line camcorder just got better. The Canon HF G10 uses SDHC/SDXC memory cards or its built-in 32gb memory. The lens on this camcorder offers a wider 30.4mm field of view to get more of the scene in your shot. With its relay feature, it can record using its internal 32gb memory, and then automatically switch recording to its memory cards (there are two SDHC memory card slots). The lens and large 1/3-inch HD Pro imager are designed for low light performance. The HD CMOS Pro sensor uses fewer pixels, which are much larger and more sensitive than the pixels of other camcorder sensors, which result in better video performance and dynamic range. Also included is a color viewfinder. Records Full HD Video. Viewfinders are disappearing on camcorders, so this is a nice feature to see, which can be used in strong sunlight when it is harder to see the LCD screen. The Touch & Track system on this camcorder keeps focus and exposure on any subject, no matter where it moves. Just choose your subject on the large 3.5-inch touchscreen. External Mic Jack. Instant AF focusing system offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy. Great for sports. The HF G10 has received outstanding reviews. The Canon HF G10 is a strong contender in 2011 for best camcorder this year, and receives the Smart-Review top pick rating.

Optical Zoom = This is the maximum zoom using the lens of the camcorder. A 10x zoom brings the action in about 10 times closer at its maximum.
External Mic Jack = This means that this camcorder is equipped with an external microphone jack or terminal to input an external microphone. There are a wide range of external microphones to choose from including wireless, surround sound, and others. An external microphone will improve the sound recording of your video. It bypasses the built in microphones.
Flash Memory = This refers to the way the camcorder records video. Flash memory camcorders normally record to memory cards (SDHC or Memory sticks if a Sony). There are some that have no card, and just have a fixed amount of internal memory such as the Flip Camcorders.
Dual Flash = This type of camcorder has both internal memory and can also record to memory cards.
Imager = This refers to the Imager of the camcorder, where the light hits from the lens. This is like the retina of the eye. The larger the imager, the better the quality of the video and better low light performance. High end camcorders generally have a larger imager. Larger is better. A 1/2.6-inch imager is double the size of a 1/5.2-inch imager.
Megapixels = This refers to the camera function in the camcorder. This is the amount of megapixels available to take a snapshot picture while using the camcorder.
P2HD Flash = This refers a new flash media P2 Cards that are used on professional camcorders to record High Definition videos. Video cameras using this type of media are usually high end models.
3D Ready = This means that this camcorder (with a 3D conversion lens) can record video in 3D to be played back on a 3D Ready TV.

One is the size and type of imager (the chip(s) that light hits inside the camcorder). The other is the Lens. For imagers, larger is better. Canon, Panasonic, and Sony have some of the largest imagers available. Sony has a new light sensitive Exmor backlit imager, and Panasonic has 3MOS (3 imagers) made for low light. Fast bright lenses can help bring more light to the imager. Panasonic for 2011-2012 has designed a new lens just for that purpose. Below are the top low light high definition camcorders for comparision , review and useful features such as external microphone jacks.
Glossary of Terms

Optical Zoom = This is the maximum zoom using the lens of the camcorder. A 10x zoom brings the action in about 10 times closer at its maximum.
Low Light Lenses = Larger and faster lenses allow more light in for greater low light sensitivity. Lenses with low f stop specifications are considered fast lenses. The camcorders on this page all have fast low light lenses with an f stop of f1.8 or lower (lower is better).
Megapixels = This refers to the camera function in the camcorder. This is the amount of megapixels available to take a snapshot picture while using the camcorder.
1080p 720p 60i 24p 60p video = camcorders can record video at various resolutions. Many can record at several different rates. 1080p is the current highest (blu-ray quality). 720p has about half the resolution of 1080p. Also keep in mind the frame rate of the video. Normal video is shot at 30fps (frames per second). 1080@60i is 60 interlaced frames, which is roughly equivalent to 1080p@30fps. Movie film is shot at 24fps (24p). Some camcorders can shoot at 60fps (60p) which will make the movie silky smooth and can be used for slow motion as well.
P2HD Flash = This refers a new flash media P2 Cards that are used on professional camcorders to record High Definition videos.
External Mic Jack = This means that this camcorder is equipped with an external microphone jack or terminal to input an external microphone. There are a wide range of external microphones to choose from including wireless, surround sound, and others. An external microphone will improve the sound recording of your video. It bypasses the built in microphones.
3D Ready = This means that this camcorder is capable of recording either normal HD video (2D) or can record in 3D with the use of an optional 3D Lens. Video can be played back on a 3D TV with 3D glasses.

Glossary of Terms

IEEE 1394 = This refers to firewire, which is a connector like USB 2.0 to give a fast connection from your pro camcorder to your computer to transfer video.
XLR Terminals = Only on professional camcorders, XLR Terminals are used primarily as a balanced audio connector for high quality microphones.
Time Code = Using a Time Code allows for synchronization of audio and video. Very useful for editing.
Optical Zoom = This is the maximum zoom using the lens of the camcorder. A 10x zoom brings the action in about 10 times closer at its maximum.
LANC Terminal = This allows Tripods which have a control handle, to connect to the LANC Terminal (through a cable) and allow you to control the camera from the controller on the Tripod.
High end pro camcorders generally have a larger imager. Larger is better. A 1/2.6-inch imager is double the size of a 1/5.2-inch imager.
Megapixels = This refers to the camera function in the camcorder. This is the amount of megapixels available to take a snapshot picture while using the camcorder.

HDD Camcorders – This is a roundup of the top-rated HDD (Hard Disk Drive) based digital camcorders. HDD camcorders use Hard Drives (same as a notebook computer) to store the incoming video. Hard Drives have the advantage of very long recording times. Some of these camcorders can also record to memory cards (They are called Hybrid camcorders). The HDD camcorders below have met SmartReview’s ratings for best camcorders. For 2011-2012 we are seeing fewer HDD camcorders (none from Canon), as manufacturers are now primarily making flash memory camcorders. Panasonic has discontinued making HDD camcorders in 2012.

Flash Memory = This refers to the way the camcorder records video. Flash memory camcorders normally record to memory cards (SDHC or Memory sticks if a Sony). There are some that have no card, and just have a fixed amount of internal memory such as the Flip Camcorders.
3D Ready = This means that this camcorder can take both regular HD video, or 3D video with a 3D Lens (usually optional). To view 3D video requires a 3D TV and 3D glasses.

Late this summer Smart-Review got to try out Panasonic’s TM90K 3D camcorder along with the optional VW-CLT1 3D conversion lens. Panasonic has 5 models of HD camcorders in 2011 that can be mated with this 3D Lens. These 3D camcorders have built-in software to work with the lens. In this article we will show you how a 3D conversion lens is fitted and adjusted to work with a Panasonic camcorder. What is nice about a 3D conversion lens is that it only needs to be attached when you need 3D. Adding an additional lens can make the camcorder bulkier. When the lens is off, you have your normal HD camcorder.

Panasonic VW-CLT1 (3D Conversion Lens)

The VW-CLT1 conversion lens includes a lens bag, step-up ring adapter (connects the camera to the lens), and a lens cap that doubles as an alignment target when adjusting the 3D lens once it is mated to the camcorder.

Step-up Ring Adapter

Attaching the lens to the camcorder: To attach the 3D lens to the Panasonic TM90 camcorder, you first have to attach the step-up ring adapter to the camcorder. Then, once secure, you attach the 3D conversion lens to the other side of the step-up ring adapter. Make sure that the lens and camcorder are locked firmly to the adapter. If it is not, you may not get good 3D results.

Lens Settings Panel

Adjusting the lens settings: Once the lens and camcorder are mated, you can now turn on the camcorder. The camcorder will sense that the lens is attached and go into 3D adjustment mode. The lens must be perfectly adjusted or you risk getting double images in your 3D videos. Panasonic tries to make this simple by having you go step by step using their help screens on the camcorder. The lens cap is translucent (allowing light to pass through) and has targets on it for alignment. There are three adjustment steps. The adjustments are done by lifting a pop-up panel on the lens which has three dials (see image on left).

Lens Settings Screen

3D Settings Screens: The TM90 and other Panasonic 3D camcorders will guide you through the settings with screens such as the one on the right. These settings will assure that the lens is perfectly aligned for 3D so you don’t see ghosts and double images as seen on some 3D TVs. It takes a couple of minutes to make the adjustments, but once the settings are completed you are good as long as you don’t bump the lens (which could put the lens out of alignment). After adjustment, you are ready to take 3D movies.

Watching your 3D Movies on a 3D TV: To watch video in 3D, you will need a 3D TV. You can connect the 3D camcorder to your 3D TV with a mini HDMI cord. Another way to view the movies are to copy them from your computer (after you download the videos to your computer with the included software from Panasonic) and put them on a USB thumb drive and plug them into your TV (If your TV supports USB and the movie format of these files). Or as we did, you can use a Sony Playstation 3 which supports 3D (with the latest firmware upgrade). When viewing these videos, you must set your TV to 3D mode and to the “Side by Side” method of 3D. The 3D conversion lens splits the view into two pictures (simulating your left and right eye). The 3D TV will take both images and combine them into one image, which the 3D glasses will then turn into a 3D image.

Smart-Review Commentary: We believe that the Panasonic TM90k, TM900k are some of the best HD camcorders in 2011. The 3D conversion lens and 3D functions are a bonus. Our tests with the 3D lens produced videos with a good 3D effect for items within 20 feet of the lens. The one letdown was that the resolution of the video was much lower than full HD. This is a result of the lens splitting the resolution of the HD sensor in the camcorder in two. As such the video looked to us somewhere between VHS and DVD resolution. So, if you want to have fun with 3D, this lens is one of the cheapest ways to get 3D. Just be aware of the limitations. If you are serious about 3D, you may want to look at a dedicated full HD 3D camcorder. (These are bulky and cost a lot of money). The TM90k that we tested was an impressive camcorder for the money. The HD 1080p 60 frames per second (2D) video was smooth and extremely clear. We liked that it had an external microphone jack and accessory shoe for better sound. The 21x zoom lens was great.

** Also reviewed on this site is the Panasonic TM900k. This model has many upgraded features to the TM90k including manual functions, larger lens, 3 imagers versus 1 imager, better low light capability, and higher resolution LCD screen.

With so many choices and features you need to understand what is important and what is not. This camcorder buying guide will help you sort out the facts on camcorders and what models best fit your needs. It will also explain the technical jargon that is important to know when buying a camcorder. Only camcorders with the best ratings are listed on this site.

Video Recording: FLASH, DUAL FLASH, HDD (Hard Drive), DVD, or MiniDV Tape? - Camcorders today store video in a variety of ways, and each type has its advantages and disadvantages. The most popular camcorders have shifted from MiniDV, to DVD, to the now popular HDD (Harddrive) and FLASH Memory. Each method of storage of video has its advantages and disadvantages as can be seen below:

DUAL FLASH MEMORY – Some of the latest flash memory camcorders not only record to flash memory SDHC flash memory cards, but also have built in memory so you can record video with or without memory cards. The most popular sizes are 32GB and 64GB. As memory prices drop, we believe that this type of camcorder will become more popular in the future. For 2011, 32gb is becoming more common, and some of the new Canon camcorders now have dual SDHC card slots for even more recording time.

FLASH Memory – Another popular group of camcorders use tiny SD, SDHC, SDXC and other flash memory cards to store video. Unlike Dual Flash, these have no internal memory. These camcorders can be tiny in size to larger professional models. There are hardly any moving parts other than the lens. They hold varying amounts of video per card. The most popular memory cards for these camcorders are the SDHC Memory cards. Currently you can get them up to 32gb at reasonable prices, and larger sizes are coming in price. Some of the smaller flash camcorders are cheap ($200 and under), but will not provide the same quality of video as larger models since their Imaging sensors and lenses are smaller, and their stabilization is inferior to mainstream camcorders. Flash Memory camcorders record only to memory cards, while dual flash record to both internal memory and cards (see above).

Hard Drive (HDD) – This format records video to a camcorder using a built in hard drive (HDD) similar to what is in a notebook computer. The advantage of a built in harddrive is that you don’t have to bother with DVDs or Tapes. The built in harddrive can hold the video equivalent of many MiniDV tapes or memory cards (depending on harddrive capacity). This should be more than enough for normal vacations and events. When you get home after shooting the video, you can then download the video to your computer with the included cables to later burn to DVD, edit, or archive. You can view video directly on your TV by hooking up the included cables to your TV set. With an HDD camcorder you can also view scenes without having to go through all the footage in sequence like tape, and can even edit and delete scenes on the fly. The one disadvantage of HDD is that you must be sure to back up your video to an external harddrive so that should your computer crash, you have an extra copy. For 2011 we are seeing fewer models as manufacturers are moving to flash based camcorders (Canon has no HDD camcorders for 2011). Hybrid HDD camcorders such as those listed below also can record to memory cards for additional flexibility.

HDD Camcorder Top Picks:

MiniDV Tape – The MiniDV tape has been a very popular format for recording video, but there are few offerings of this type today. Most professional camcorders still use tape. For standard definition camcorders (not HD), the video is transferred with little or no compression to the tape, giving the maximum quality which is important for editing should you want to produce your own productions with the videos you take. Tapes are inexpensive and can give you 60 to 90 minutes depending on selected quality. To view MiniDV camcorders on your TV you can hookup the camcorder using included cables. If you are going to be doing a lot of editing of the video, MiniDV camcorders are a good choice as they have less compression than other models. MiniDV tapes also give you excellent archival storage backup. Even if you transfer your video to a computer and the computer drive crashes, you still have your tape. For consumer camcorders, convenience is leading to HDD camcorders to be more popular than MiniDV. With tape, you have to go through the entire tape to view it (sequentially). For High Definition MiniDV Tape maxes out at 1080i, while flash memory and HDD based camcorders now have 1080p (twice the resolution).

MiniDV Top Pick: Canon HV40

DVD – Although once the most popular, recording directly to Mini DVDs is no longer the most popular camcorder format. Standard definition DVD camcorders will create DVDs that will play directly in your home DVD player with no modifications. These mini DVDs are inexpensive, and give you between 20 minutes and 60 minutes of recording time per disc depending on the quality setting. You cannot edit DVDs directly, but must transfer the video to a computer and re-edit them. DVD camcorders compress the video more than other methods which can result in lower video quality. If you plan to edit your videos DVD camcorders are not your first choice.

Video Quality - Most camcorders do a good job in bright sunlight outside. However, camcorders that have a larger video sensor (Imager) perform better than camcorders with smaller ones (especially in low light). The video imager is the area that light hits (like the retina in your eye) after it travels through the camcorder lens. The larger the imager it is, the more fine detail can be recorded. Bigger is better. Larger imagers generally come with higher priced camcorders. So if video quality, colors, and fine details are important, a camcorder with a larger sensor will perform much better than that of one with a smaller sensor. The best imagers on consumer camcorders today are 1/3-inch or larger. Most of our Top-picks have larger imagers. We list imager size in all of our comparison and roundup pages.

Low Light Performance - As with video quality, a camcorder with a larger sensor will have better light gathering ability, and low light performance. Those camcorders with larger (faster) lenses will also help in low light situations. The above camcorders that have large Imagers will do well in low light, however only the professional camcorder will give you BOTH a larger video Imager and larger faster lenses for excellent low light ability. Poor low light performance is the number one complaint of people buying camcorders. If low light performance is important, get a camcorder with a larger Imager. Some reviewers have reported that buying a video light makes a big difference in low light situations.

High Definition (HD) or Standard Definition? - Today you have two choices in camcorders. Standard Definition, which is up to DVD quality, or High Definition which greatly exceeds DVD quality. In the future, all camcorders will be high definition, as that is the way the industry is headed. With a high definition camcorder, you usually have the option of recording in either standard or high definition. Even if you record in high definition, you can still play it through your standard (non HD) TV set. To future proof your videos, you can record in high definition today and eventually be able to able to transfer them to Blueray disc, Playstation 3, HD Tivo or another device. Most HD camcorders allow you to connect your camcorder directly to an HDTV through its HDMI or component input. When you hook up one of the top rated high definition camcorders to an HDTV, you will see stunning quality close to that of the best broadcast/cable HD programming such as the Discovery Channel. These camcorders can produce very high quality HD video. HD camcorders are now only slightly more expensive than Standard Definition camcorders, so Smart-Review recommends buying an HD camcorder to future proof your videos.

Professional Video Quality - If uncompromising video quality is top on your priority list, then a professional quality video camera may be your choice. A professional video camera/camcorder will generally be much larger than its consumer siblings. This helps in several ways. One is that the video sensors will be larger for better quality, and the lenses will be bigger for better light gathering and low light performance. Today, these professional camcorders come in two flavors. Standard definition (TV quality) and High Definition. Several of the professional models have been used to make documentaries and even full length movies. These are a favorite of indie (independant) filmmakers and those that record important events such as weddings. These larger camcorders also have the option of interchangeable lenses, separate microphones, wireless microphones, and many other options not available on consumer camcorders. Many professional camcorders incorporate the 3ccd sensor technology.

One for each color (red, blue and green). These type of sensors have generally been better than a single sensor. The advantage of a 3MOS sensor is that with the data from each of the three sensors, you can find out the exact hue, brightness, and saturation of each pixel, you’re no longer interpolating (which is estimating). 3MOS has better low-light shooting, lower power consumption, and truer colors than other imaging systems. Panasonic has pioneered this technology, which was an upgrade from the older 3CCD technology.

The leader in this field is Panasonic, as they have released several models this year. Panasonic has upgraded its top of line camcorder from last year to be 3D compatible. This model is the HDC-TM900k. This camcorder can record regular HD, or with the addition of an option 3D conversion lens, can record in 3D. These camcorders record in what is called side by side 3D, which splits the picture into two frames. In order for the picture to fit in the bandwidth limit for recording HD video, the picture is split into two frames with lower resolution than the full 1080p HD. In order to playback the 3D, you need a 3D TV, glasses, and the ability to playback the side by side method of 3D (most 3D TVs, including Panasonic and Samsung). You may also be able to get a firmware upgrade to your 3D TV should it require one to playback “side by side” 3D. Most cable TV 3D broadcasts use the “side” by “side” method, exactly the same resolution as this camcorder.

Optical Zoom – Optical Zoom refers to how close an object can be “zoomed in”. So a camcorder with a 10x zoom can bring a distant object about 2 times closer than a camcorder with a 5x zoom. Larger zoom lenses can give you more options. If you see a reference to digital zoom, this is an electronic representation of optical zoom, and really just crops the picture and you lose resolution. With optical zoom, you do not lose resolution. Digital zoom should not be a consideration in our opinion to purchasing a camcorder, while optical zoom should be considered. Most of our top-rated camcorders come with a 10x zoom which is good for most applications.

Microphone – All camcorders record in stereo sound. All have built in microphones. For better quality you can buy higher quality microphones, and even get a wireless microphone for some models. Several camcorders have a built in surround sound recording system (Dolby 5.1).

There are two ways to add an extra microphone to a camcorder. One is to plug it into a microphone jack (if available), or what is called an accessory shoe which allows accessories to attach to your camcorder.

LCD Size and resolution – The LCD is the screen that you use to compose your video, and view menus for the camcorder. Many are touchscreens which makes going through the menus easier. (You just touch a choice on the menu). LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, the current technology used for such displays. A larger LCD screen is much easier to see. In addition to size its also important to look at the resolution of the screen (i.e. how many pixels does it have). The more pixels used for a screen the better. So for both LCD size and number of pixels on the screen, higher is better.

Manual Features/Zoom – Automatic focusing is standard on all camcorders. However there are times when you may wish to manually focus your camcorder. Examples are low light, macro (closeup), shooting through glass, and indoor shots where automatic focusing is not as effective. All professional camcorders can focus manually. Most of our top rated camcorders include the manual focus option.

1080p 720p 60i 60p video – Camcorders can record video at various resolutions. 60p means 60 progressive frames per second.

Snapshot Feature - Many of the newer camcorders offer the ability of the camcorder to take pictures (still photos) with your video camera. Many list the size of the pictures they can take in megapixels. Image quality varies from camcorder to camcorder, but you should not expect the same quality as a dedicated digital camera. Use this feature more as a convenience when you don’t have your digital camera with you. Most of the Top-Rated camcorders we feature take pictures at 8 megapixels or higher.

Image Stabilization (IS) – Image Stabilization is a technology that reduces the blurry video that you could get in low light, using a zoom lens, or riding in a car. (Sony camcorders call their image stabilization SteadyShot). This technology compensates for any movement of the camcorder you are holding to give you sharp video, even in low light. This is a very valuable and useful feature. Almost all camcorders now have this feature. This also helps when using your zoom out to its full magnification. As you zoom in, any shaking of the camcorder is magnified. Optical (as opposed to digital) stabilization is considered to be best.

Built-in Video Light/Flash - Many camcorders have a built in flash (for the snapshot feature – still pictures) and/or a video light for lower light situations. External flash units and video lights are available as accessories for many camcorders.
